Coronavirus and Tax: Can I Get Help Paying My Tax?

Further to my blogs on Coronavirus and the Budget, below is some further information on support for Small Businesses surrounding coronavirus and tax. Let’s begin with TTP.

What is a Time to Pay (TTP) Arrangement?

TTP is a handy scheme when it comes to coronavirus and tax. It’s a government arrangement which allows you to stagger your debt to the HMRC over monthly instalments.

The repayments can be staggered over several months, typically over a period of up to one year and – depending on your business circumstances and affordability – some arrangements can be agreed over longer periods.

So now; more than ever, during the current coronavirus and tax situation, it’s vital you consider taking advantage of a TTP Arrangement.

And there’s more good news from the government. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the Chancellor’s April 2020 Budget announced that the TTP scheme would in ramped up to help allow small businesses and the self-employed defer tax payments over an agreed period of time.

A dedicated helpline with 2,000 staff was launched on 12th March 2020 to help with the demand of calls.

Should you need to contact regarding coronavirus and tax, you can find the HRMC details below.

If You Cannot Pay Your Self Assessment Tax Bill

If you’ve filed your return and owe less than £10,000, you might be able to arrange to pay in instalments online.

You do not need to contact the HMRC if you have already set up a payment plan online.

Call the Self Assessment helpline if you’ve missed your payment date or you cannot use the online service.

If You Cannot Pay Other Taxes

If you’ve received a payment demand, like a tax bill or a letter threatening legal action, call the HMRC office that sent you the letter.

If you have not received a bill or letter, you must call the Payment Support Service:

If you contact the HRMC when you have trouble paying now or at any point in the future, it will help to reduce any penalties that they might apply.

Employers Who Are Eligible for Small Business Rate Relief

Another supporting element that has been introduced in yesterday’s budget is for those Employers who are eligible for Small Business Rate Relief.

If you are eligible, a grant of £3,000 will be made available to help small businesses.

At the time of writing, we don’t know how that grant can be applied for yet but as soon as I know any more information, I will let you know.
